Eventually due to pleas from the Duchess of York, the King choses to let Aumerle go free, and instead go to arrest the other perpetrators in the conspiracy to kill him. The idea of a divine ruler puts allegiances in places outside of the family, which the reader sees demonstrated here so well. Even though it was his own son that would be executed or banished due to the attempted uprising, the power of the crown made him chase Aumerle to the King to let him know of the truth. The Duke of York turns his son into King Henry IV for treason because of his support for the new King, calling Aumerle a: “Villain! traitor! slave!” (5.2.72). If word was out that Richard II was indeed alive and would not give up his position as King, I believe there would be a faction of supporters that would come to the King’s aid, especially coming from the church sent on behalf of the Bishop of Carlisle. However, they did respect that he divinely has ascended to this throne. In the play, the Bishop of Carlisle refers to Richard II as: “ figure of God’s majesty” (4.1.116) Yes, it is true that many people did not like Richard II. Any sort of treasonous act would be considered not only against a mortal man in a place of power, but against a Godly figure. In “On Divine Right of Kings”, the King is seen as both God’s “Lieutenants on Earth, sit upon God’s throne”, and in a more divine light, are “by God himself considered gods”. We’ve seen the ideology behind why the ruling families were so admired by the people. What would have happened if Richard II was not assassinated, and would the power of the ruling family stay with Henry IV, or move back to Richard II? Although these may all be true, I’d like to think of an alternative scenario. These deeds cannot be denied, and do support an admiration for Henry IV and for his obvious empathy for others. He even pardons the former Duke of Aumerle–now the Earl of Ruthland–of an attempted murder plot because of his mother’s powerful words and the Earl’s confession. Most of course would say Henry IV would be a better king for England, and why not? He treats subjects fairly, saves personal orders for death only for those who he deemed responsible for the degradation of England, repents greatly after believing that he may have caused Richard II’s death. After finishing Richard II, I wondered what other people’s opinions of each of the monarchs style of rule.
